Top 4 reasons you need a branding photographer

You’ve probably heard the term “branding," but just in case you need a refresher on what it means:

"Simply put, your brand is your promise to your customer. It tells them what they can expect from your products and services, and it differentiates your offering from that of your competitors. Your brand is derived from who you are, who you want to be and who people perceive you to be." - Entrepreneur

Branding is important. It can make or break a business, and good branding can put you at the top in a competitive market. And what is a key element in showcasing your brand? Photography!

Here are 4 reasons you should consider hiring a branding photographer:

1. Custom photography sets you apart from your competitors.

When it comes to photography, a startup or small business person will often simply get a headshot done, use some stock photos, and call it a day. But how does that differentiate you from your competitors? If most people use stock photography, how can you set yourself apart from that?

A branding photographer will create custom images, only for you. These images will be designed to showcase your personality and values. If you offer a service, they will show visually what you can do or what it looks like when you’re working. If you offer a product, you need to show it visually! The best way to entice people to buy is through the photos used to show it off. A professional photographer will be able to do that in a way that others can’t. Which leads me to…

2. Professional photography helps you look legit.

There are some people who decide to DIY it and take the photos for their website or social media themselves. While I do believe that there are great photographers out there who aren’t necessarily trained or studied in the field of photography, let’s remember that “you don’t know what you don’t know.” Those amateur photos could be killing your credibility.

Hiring a professional photographer for your branding shows that you’re willing to invest in your business. This ups your value and helps position you as an expert in the eyes of your potential client.

3. Photography can reinforce your brand and tell your story.

Just as a quality logo and brand color choices are important, so too are images in branding. Your story - your “why I do what I do” - should be clear and reinforced, and photography helps accomplish this goal. If you are selling products, showcase them not only individually, but in action - being utilized and enjoyed. If you are a one man/woman show, have images that capture what you do on the daily. This could include meetings or phone calls with clients, you “at work” (on a computer, at your desk or in a coffee shop - whatever is most you), taking a coffee break, or writing in your planner. Think about the things you do on a daily basis - especially what is unique to you, and incorporate those into a branding photography session. Then utilize the photos not only on your website, but in your marketing as well - email newsletters, social media posts, etc.

Remember that some people are just more visual than others, and not everyone loves to read. I put some of these points in bold for a reason, haha! Showing who you are and what you do visually is just as imperative as telling people through words (though, words are important too - don’t forget about SEO).

4. Photos help establish CONNECTION with your clients.

Great photography for your business helps you form a good first impression among clients. Photos connect with people faster than words, and once you’ve established that connection people are more likely to stick around your site to read more of your message. You want to come across to your clients as reliable and relatable. Photography helps with that! Quality and custom photos help inspire confidence and trust, and creates a desire to buy your product or buy into the service you’re selling.

To summarize, a good branding photographer learns who you are, what’s important to you, and determines how you can best showcase that through the photos on your website and in your social media / marketing content. Remember, people love the personal touches. The better you can showcase who you are, the more likely people feel connected to you, and in turn, want to support you, hire you, or buy from you.
